The Eye (<--- The evil Eye of the storm) Middle-Earth Names for Hurricanes

Now that Rita is past, more or less, with less damage than was feared, maybe we can make light of the stormy dangers this summer has brought by thinking up Middle-Earth names for hurricanes. No lists - please explain your reasons for the names you choose!

Fëanor - The Elf with the stormiest temper is a good choice, isn't he? Although, on second thought, his element is fire, not wind and water; still...

Manwë - The Lord of the Winds. Need I say more? Mighty enough to cause such a storm too.

Ossë - My favorite choice. The evidence against him is overwhelming:
Quote:
...in storms he delights, and laughs amid the roaring of the waves.
...the delight in violence has never wholly departed from him, and at times he will rage in his wilfulness...
Movie-Galadriel - She looks like she could brew up quite a storm, maybe by using that watery Mirror of hers?

Melkor - Just because we can blame him for everything that's evil in the world.

What are your ideas?

This is too good to resist!

Despite our family's genuine relief that we are safe and our house is in one piece, I am not feeling too kindly about hurricanes right now. We drove twenty- five miles in seven hours trying to evacuate and then had no choice but to run out of gas or to return home. (We opted for the latter.) Today my husband spent half the day searching for gas to put in the car and the other half waiting in line (only a slight exaggeration -- ). There is only one store in our neighborhood open, and the shelves have more empty spaces than food! Our electricity keeps flickering on and off with power surges; cable and computer connections and even the phone are up and down for some strange reason. Still, we are extremely grateful for what could have been so much worse.

Here are some of my Middle-earth candidates:

The Spiders of Mirkwood -- A category three hurricane is like a pack of scary web weavers, spinning out of control. They inflict major damage on some poor victims while letting others slip out of their clutches. You may think you have escaped their web, but then the little critters send out new strands still hoping to cause you minor misery.

Shelob - The mother of all mothers....the category five hurricane that thankfully never came.

Saruman - The kind of guy you can never trust. You think you know what he is doing but then he turns around and does something totally different.

Watcher in the Water - You forget he is there since he generally stays out of sight. You go about your business and conveniently forget that you are living fairly close to the water in a place that can be quite dangerous. Then he sticks out his tentacle to try and claw you in, and you are actually surprised.

That's exactly what Katrina. It came outta nowhere.

Hurin - When the hurricane keeps comming and doesn't stop. What was going through all those troll's minds, you ask? Well I'll tell you: "He Just Won't Die!"

Movie Arwen - Because she's so whiny, she makes me want to evacuate the movie theater!

Ulmo - Lord of water. When he unsubmerges (My online thesaurus didn't have any antonyms) great title waves get the coast. Maybe he's doing cannon balls during hurricanes.

Mumakil - Because they're so good at crashing into things!

Sauron - Category 5 hurricane because he always hits hard!

Category1 Hurricane: Lotho -because it would be enough to cause some major problems but most likely survivable.

Spurred from Perky's idea...
Sauron: Such a name should only belong to a storm with a great EYE. HAH! Eye of the storm? Eh? Eh?

Namo: Meaning "Ordainer" or "Judge", and is another title for Mandos. Its nearly impossible for anyone to 'judge' where a hurricane will make landfall, unless you're the driving force.

How about Turambar -master of doom.

Or maybe Luthien? I mean look at all the dancing and spinning she was making in the woods..

Oh. My. Eru. That was the worst. (But I loved it...)

Category one, though...
Hurricane Pippin: Much less dangerous than other hurricanes, but tends to muck up most everything in its path.

It seems to me that Aerandir would fit the bill. His name translates into "Sea wanderer" which is what large storms are apt to do out in their respective large bodies of water.

And if we were to strictly look at the meanings of names Balrog "Demon of Might" makes an excellent name. Of course its hard to credit a storm of water and wind with a name fit for a demon of shadow and flame.

On the other side of the spectrum: Caranthir would also make a fitting storm name when we consider his quick anger and harsh temperment being that of a brutal storm.

* (Heres hoping all those barrow-Floridians come out unscathed!)

My German class had a big debate about this last year. We couldn't think of one until finally one of us remembered the word emerge. Very useful, it is.

Hurricane Aragron could be interesting. It would lead the other hurricanes into battle. Very determined, too...

Hurricane Sauron: starts off as a cat. 5 then turns into a cat. 1 before falling apart all together.

Hurricane Furney: Builds up and looks threatening, but rips you off with just a light drizzle.

Hurricane Fatty Lumpkin: a name fit for a storm which consumes much of both elements and space, but is in no way disappointing (like Rita was. Grr).

Hurricane Turin: Long, arduous, full of tragedy and would probably make a good film.

Heres another vote for Hurricane Pippin:
A densely compacted little storm that threatens children that he could turn them on their heads without hardly thinking about it. That is, very rightly stated considering hurricanes don't have minds to think.

Grond would certainly oblitorate some shorelines.

Also I'm suprised no one has so far suggested Hurricane Gwaihir. Certainly a proud name for the Lord of the Eagles could manifest some gustly-- I mean ghastly fears.

Hehehe... I love the suggestions!

Sharkey - did more damage in the Shire than a regular hurricane would

Hobbits = hurricanes of words/talk

Balrog - you never know if he'll fly or not...

Shadowfax - just look at his speed!

This is a funny thread. I like it.

I assume it will stir a bit of a storm if I mentioned "hurricane Lalaith" at this point?

Only if Urwen finds out. And Galadriel55. Then you'd have a tornado, not a hurricane, though, because the meeting of opposite winds from those two bags of hot air would create one . . .

(Just joking, of course. Please don't hurt me . . . nooooo, don't set Lalaith on me! I repent!)
