I'm not sure if it works but...:
1) Try making up random inside jokes with some LOTR buddies. Then when you're all together with the non Tolkien freaks, keep repeating them and mentioning them. After a while, it might be tempting to at least
try to watch the movies or read the books. Though, this only seems to work with close friends.
2) Convince them that one of the characters/ actors is really hot. They may or may not become dedicated fans, but at least they'll be interested.
3) Then there's the old brainwashing technique....
